6 Predictions for the Future of the Internet

I’d be very happy if the only thing to come true was IE6 dying a quick death. Bonus points if Google Voice gets number portability set up (in the near future).

6 Predictions for the Future of the Internet: “

Last September the Internet turned 40. I think it’s safe to say that no technology has evolved so much in so little time. Even in the past fifteen years or so, it has completely reinvented itself; arguably several times. Now we not only shop, bank, work and meet people online; but we share what we are doing at any given moment (e.g. Twitter), and even keep statistics on daily minutia. We read, listen and watch everything. We Digg, rate, share and favorite content daily.

So what’s next?

Really nice charting API

Title says it all. Via Ajaxian:

Highcharts: Really nice charting API

We all want better and better charting libraries. Dojo has some good stuff, Protovis is a good option, and there are many many more (put your favourite below!).

The latest guy in the ring is Highcharts uses either jQuery or MooTools for some common JavaScript tasks. In addition, Internet Explorer needs ExCanvas which emulates the Canvas element.

Free Stock Photos

Six Revisions has a great list of the “15 Best Places for Designers to Get Free Stock Photos Online”. I’ve personally used a bunch of these sites including NASA’s Image Galleries, which are fun to just browse, as well as stock.xchng, MorgueFile and Creative Common’s image search. Your results will vary. If you’re not having any luck with any of these sites I highly recommend dropping a buck on something over at istockphoto.com.

15 Best Places for Designers to Get Free Stock Photos Online: “

I’m not sure if you’ve ever had a look at the prices on some non-stock photography sites (pictures of Gummy bears for $769.00 anyone?), but they reach far beyond the budget of the typical designer/developer. However, many places online allow you to obtain high-quality stock photos for free, giving the average starving artist a chance to create wonderful works of art/design without having to use next month’s rent on stock photos.

Zen Coding: Generating HTML from selectors

Wow, this is awesome. I’d love to see a BBEdit plugin for this.

Zen Coding: Generating HTML from selectors

Normally we use CSS selectors to find and tear apart HTML. Sergey Chikuyonok’s jujitsu move is to do the opposite. With Zen Coding you take a CSS selector like this:

The Funny and Bizarre World of Client Requests

Great article about client requests. I’ve personally come across probably all of these at one time or another. One of my favorite requests when was someone asked if I could make the bullets in a bulleted list blue because the color blue was more “internety”. I’m not making that up.

1. Bigger Logo

Probably the most requested of all time is to make the logo bigger or more ‘prominent’. Many clients seem not to recognise branding as a whole and think that the most effective way to improve that is by increasing the size of the logo.

The logo must be a 200% bigger
